Area of Focus: Hip, Knee & Lower Extremity and Joint Replacement

Evaluate patients with failed hip replacement and complex hip reconstructive problems in order to formulate appropriate treatment plans and operative strategies. Gain familiarity with the equipment alternatives to perform both complex and revision procedures and learn how to manage and avoid complications.

Successful completion of this independent study program provides you with the knowledge to:

  • Describe the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative considerations in primary total hip arthroplasty for dysplasia, post-traumatic arthritis, proximal femoral deformity, poor bone quality and hip osteoarthritis.
  • List primary considerations influencing choice of surgical exposure for total hip arthroplasty in patients with posttraumatic arthritis.
  • Describe the advantages, disadvantages, and adverse outcomes associated with different bearing surfaces; highly crosslinked polyethylene, metal on metal, and ceramic on ceramic.
  • Evaluate the current views on small incision hip arthroplasty including the rationale, exposures, and complications, associated with the posterior, anterolateral, and direct anterior approaches.
  • State the advantages, disadvantages, reported outcomes, and learning curve issues associated with hip resurfacing.
  • List the factors influencing early failures in hip resurfacing.
  • Interpret the components of the Surface Arthroplasty Risk Index (SARI) and use the SARI to predict the risk of short term hip resurfacing failures.
  • Evaluate the reasons hip resurfacing is, and is not, considered a conservative surgical option.
