Welcome to the Practice Management Center
The practice of orthopaedics, from a clinical perspective, has never been more exciting. Technology continues to facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic breakthroughs that improve patient care and the quality of life. Today’s orthopaedic surgeon, however, must not only be clinically competent, but must also understand the basic principles required to manage the business side of the practice in a proactive manner. Furthermore, regardless of the size of the practice, the physician must keep informed of the issues that continue to change the economics of health care and affect income. In this ever-changing environment, the Practice Management Center is a resource that provides AAOS members and their practice administrators with information and the means to share knowledge with each other. For example:- Private Practice Operations. Under Information and Resources, you will find a selection of articles, checklists, and references to assist you in the day-to-day management of your private or small group practice. Topics include billing and collection, finance and accounting, governance, marketing and patient relations, information systems and technology, and more. Members of the Practice Management Committee, consultants, and staff author this material.
- Academic Practice Operations. For this segment of the membership, you will find articles and monographs, and summaries of surveys of academic orthopaedists.
- News Dispatches. This section is up-dated monthly with selected abstracts of practice management related articles from a range of business, medical, professional and technical sources. You can also submit items of interest to post here.
- CPT/ICD-9 Coding Counsel. You will find important information to ensure that you are being paid correctly for the work performed.
- Compliance. This section provides information and guidance with respect to federal fraud and abuse legislation, HIPAA, and so forth.
- Advice Center. AAOS Members can submit a question on practice management and an Advisory Panel composed of AAOE (formerly BONES) members and/or the Center Editor will respond.
- Practice Transitions. Whether you are transitioning from graduate medical training to practice, or from partial to full retirement, this section contains an array of articles, monographs, evaluation forms and references to assist you in making transitions.
In the future, you can access the links above via the left hand navigation panel on this page. Be sure to also look at the right side navigation panel for additional practice management resources, e.g, the AAOS Group Purchasing Program, how to build your own practice web site, and more.
Please keep in mind that environments and circumstances are unique to each practice. Evaluate your practice environment to determine if information contained here is applicable. If questions or concerns remain concerning an issue that directly affects your practice operations, consult your practice management business administrator/consultant or legal counsel. (Please read the Terms, Conditions and Disclaimers prior to using the Practice Management Center information.)
If you have questions or suggestions for future content, feel free to contact me or a member of the Practice Management Committee via telephone or email.
