Communication Skills Mentoring Program

About the CSMP

Communication skills are important in the patient/physician relationship for both understanding and trust. Improved patient and physician satisfaction, adherence to treatments, outcomes, and reduced liability have all been reported with better communication.

Because communication skills can be taught, orthopaedic surgeons should strive to improve these skills throughout our careers. Public opinion surveys conducted by the Academy reveal that Americans view us as "high tech, low touch." Therefore, it is important to find new ways to address our communication skills, as part of our continuing medical education.

The Institute for Healthcare Communication is training a select group of 25 AAOS Communication Skills Mentors, who will conduct interactive workshops based on the Institute's educational model at local, state, regional, and residency programs.

Workshop participants consider specific communication techniques. They discuss orthopaedic specific video vignettes of new patient interviews. Workbooks reinforce the skills that are discussed with the Mentors. The Institute awards up to 4 ½ hours CME credit to each participant.

CSMP Mentors will present 100 workshops to approximately 2000 residents and fellows over a three year period. The program will then continue following successful evaluation.
