Nearly half of Americans don't understand medical terms, directions
The latest report from the Institute of Medicine indicates that an estimated 90 million Americans, approximately half the nation's adults, have difficulty understanding medical terms and directions. They have problems following instructions on drug labels, interpreting consent forms, and understanding a doctor's diagnosis and instructions. As a result, they are more likely to rely on expensive emergency services rather than basic preventive care. The report calls for a coordinated effort by the health care system, educations, the media and consumers to improve "health literacy."
