Communication can combat doorknob syndrome

 

New communication tactics can help eliminate the doorknob phenomenon, a situation in which patients who are embarrassed about certain topics avoid bringing up symptoms until the very end of their physician visit, Associated Press reported. Physicians' rushed schedules and patients' hesitation to reveal frightening or embarrassing symptoms make these questions at the tail end of the visit almost inevitable. However, medical schools increasingly are teaching students how to avoid these situations by encouraging them to listen and to better "read" patients.
