Learn to address the challenges of treating mature athletes
This unique, interactive educational experience focuses the basic science, physiological, and biological issues and challenges facing your aging athletic baby boomer patients as they remain active into their mature years. Learn to recognize these Boomeritis® effects and counsel your patients – from the weekend to the master athletes – on how to manage aging and its effects on their participation in sports.

This course addresses issues from nutrition, performance enhancing drugs, and non-operative treatments to wellness of the “whole athlete”, cutting-edge surgical solutions for conditions seen in a boomer population, and the application of other anti-aging substances and supplements for shoulder, hip, and knee. Gain insight into osteoarthritis, hip problems, rotator cuff conditions, and the impact of cartilage regeneration techniques. Your world-class faculty also discusses degenerative, arthritic, and traumatic conditions that result from injuries, and takes an expanded approach to treating the aging female athlete. You’ll cover a broad array of other conditions affecting aging active baby boomer patients with a particular focus on anti-aging and managing the aging process– all with the goal of keeping these athletes well and at the top of their game. In addition to ample time for discussion, questions, and audience participation, the half-day format gives you time to view vendor displays and enjoy Hilton Head Island.

This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:

  • Recognize how the normal physiologic effects of aging affect participation in sports for mature athletes
  • Counsel athletes on the musculoskeletal manifestation of aging and participation in sports
  • Apply basic science principles for age-related changes in bone, meniscus, articular cartilage, and the muscle tendon complex for mature athletes
  • Recognize the impact of anti-aging drugs such as growth hormones and other aspects of drug and supplement treatments. For example, NSAIDS, glucosamine, and injectable medicines for musculoskeletal conditions
  • Determine the appropriate non-operative and operative treatment plans for mature adult athletes with traumatic, degenerative, and arthritic conditions particularly related to the knee, hip, shoulder, and spinelder and spine
  • Analyze the impact of arthroplasty, cartilage regeneration techniques and the rotator cuff on the baby boomer athlete
Who should attend?
The focus of this year’s course – treating the “whole athlete” – makes it an ideal learning experience for both surgical and non-surgical practitioners. Orthopaedic surgeons can enhance their understanding of current treatment options for conditions seen in the baby boomer population. Primary care physicians, physical therapists, and sports medicine specialists will expand their knowledge of preventative and post-operative techniques for caring for their aging athletic patients.
