Participation Requirement:
    Participants in Academy surgical skills programs must have completed or be currently enrolled in a residency program accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Surgeons from outside of the United States are required to have similar residency program credentials.

The purpose of this course is to provide practicing orthopedic spine surgeons with the latest techniques in spinal surgery. The course will cover indications, surgical technique, complications and a hands-on cadaveric experience to practice such techniques. Participants will learn advanced surgical techniques for treating cervical, thoracic and lumbar pathologies.

This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:

  • Evaluate patients with cervical, thoracic and lumbar pathologies and formulate a treatment plan.
  • Review anatomy and basic science of the spinal anatomy
  • Compare and contrast various surgical and nonsurgical treatment protocols for different spinal pathologies
  • Discuss alternative treatment and rehabilitation techniques for spinal disorders
  • Compare and contrast techniques of treating spinal pathologies
  • Discuss complications of spine surgery and how to avoid them
  • Distinguish between or among the equipment alternatives necessary to perform alternative spinal surgeries
  • Apply contemporary strategies for infection control.
  • Apply contemporary strategies for pain management

Request for a refund must be received in writing in the Academy Office (AAOS, 6300 North River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018-4262) by October-14-2010. In all instances a cancellation fee will be charged. Beyond these dates, no monetary refunds will be issued. Instead, the tuition amount, less cancellation fee, will be credited toward another AAOS course within one year.

The Academy reserves the right to cancel a course thirty (30) days prior to the course date. Any person who has registered for the course will be notified by email and/or certified mail at the address noted in the AAOS member database. A telephone call will also be made to each registrant for whom a number is available. Persons whose registration is received after a course is cancelled will be notified by telephone, email or mail. Registration fees will be refunded in full. However, other costs incurred by the registrant, such as airline or hotel penalties are the responsibility of the registrant.
