Update your knowledge in the field of sports medicine and review some of the most challenging issues faced by the team physician. This course provides a contemporary perspective on how to evaluate and treat athletes with injuries at all levels of sport.
The expert faculty will review the indications for surgical intervention as well as the nonoperative management of orthopaedic sports medicine injuries in athletes. The latest surgical techniques will be taught by the faculty, emphasizing pearls, tricks and pitfalls. The unique course format will include didactic lectures, case presentations, expert panel discussions and an audience response system that facilitates an interactive approach to the management of athlete’s injuries and treatments.
The focus is to provide a practical approach to the complicated and complex problems facing the team physician. Highlights include lectures on: the mechanics and rehabilitation of the throwing athlete, rationale and new techniques in labral and cuff reconstructions and biceps problems, treatment of the throwing athletes elbow, latest options and rationale in treating meniscus and articular cartilage pathology, ACL reconstruction complications and revision surgery, posterolateral and posteromedial knee injuries, and the use of arthroscopy in evaluating and treating hip problems in the athlete.
This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:
- Evaluate patients with a wide range of sports injuries and formulate a treatment plan.
- Review anatomy and basic science of knee articular cartilage lesions in order to understand appropriate treatment options.
- Compare and contrast various surgical and nonsurgical treatment protocols for posterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries.
- Discuss alternative treatment and rehabilitation techniques for hip labral tears.
- Compare and contrast open and arthroscopic shoulder stabilization techniques.
- Discuss complications of knee ligament reconstruction surgery and how to avoid them.
- Distinguish between or among the equipment alternatives necessary to perform hip arthroscopy.
- Understand potential advantages and disadvantages of double bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.
- Understand how to order and follow optimum physical therapy for patients recovering from shoulder and elbow stabilization surgery.
- Apply contemporary strategies for pain management and for infection control

Request for a refund must be received in writing in the Academy Office (AAOS, 6300 North River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018-4262) by February-04-2010. In all instances a cancellation fee will be charged. Beyond these dates, no monetary refunds will be issued. Instead, the tuition amount, less cancellation fee, will be credited toward another AAOS course within one year.
The Academy reserves the right to cancel a course thirty (30) days prior to the course date. Any person who has registered for the course will be notified by email and/or certified mail at the address noted in the AAOS member database. A telephone call will also be made to each registrant for whom a number is available. Persons whose registration is received after a course is cancelled will be notified by telephone, email or mail. Registration fees will be refunded in full. However, other costs incurred by the registrant, such as airline or hotel penalties are the responsibility of the registrant.
