This document addresses the treatment of OA of the knee in adults (defined as patients 19 years of age and older). The guideline provides information on patient management post-diagnosis up to, but not including, knee replacement (arthroplasty). This guideline does not address patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory arthropathies.
OA of the knee incidence in the United States is estimated at 240 per 100,000 person years. It is difficult to estimate the prevalence of osteoarthritis disease because there are no universally applicable criteria for its diagnosis. Further, there is often no correlation between symptoms and clinical signs of OA of the knee. The prevalence of symptomatic OA of the knee is estimated, five percent referring to adults who are 26 years and older, seventeen percent for adults 45 years and older, and twelve percent for adults 60 years and older.
Osteoarthritis (of any joint) was the primary diagnosis in 11.1 million ambulatory care visits in 2004 and “an estimated 9.3 million adults had symptomatic OA of the knee in 2005.
The AAOS creates evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to improve patient care by outlining the appropriate information-gathering and decision-making processes involved in managing various orthopaedic conditions. CPGs are an educational tool that may guide qualified physicians through a series of diagnostic and treatment decision in an effort to improve the quality and efficiency of care. The guidelines should not be construed as including all proper methods of care of excluding methods of care reasonable directed to obtaining the same results. The ultimate judgment regarding any specific procedure or treatment must be made in light of all circumstances presented by the patient and the needs and resources particular to the locality or institution. In December of 2008, the AAOS released the guideline on the treatment of OA Knee. The work group systematically reviewed the available literature, evaluated the level of evidence found in the literature, and subsequently wrote the recommendations based on a standardized process.
An important segment of this webinar is an explanation of how the Work Group evaluated the medical literature to formulate the guideline recommendations.
All medical guidelines created by AAOS are submitted for posting on the National Guidelines Clearinghouse web site (www.ngc.gov)
This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:
- Be able to apply the guideline when treating patient with OA Knee.
- Be able to evaluate evidence regarding non-operative treatment protocols for care of the patient with OA Knee.
- Understand evidence-based medicine and how the AAOS guideline development process promotes transparency and eliminates biases.
