The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

In a typical year, orthopaedic surgeons and other physicians see 1 to 3 cases/1,000 persons per year. The prevalence of disease is 50 cases per 1,000 persons in the general population. CTS is the most disorder of the upper extremity. The cost of treatment continues to increase and for some patients CTS is the result of occupational activities.

The AAOS creates evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to improve patient care by outlining the appropriate information-gathering and decision-making processes involved in managing various orthopaedic conditions. CPGs are an educational tool that may guide qualified physicians through a series of diagnostic and treatment decision in an effort to improve the quality and efficiency of care. The guidelines should not be construed as including all proper methods of care of excluding methods of care reasonable directed to obtaining the same results. The ultimate judgment regarding any specific procedure or treatment must be made in light of all circumstances presented by the patient and the needs and resources particular to the locality or institution. In May of 2007, the AAOS released the guideline on the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) followed by the CTS treatment guideline in September of 2008. The work group systematically reviewed the available literature, evaluated the level of evidence found in the literature, and subsequently wrote the recommendations based on a standardized process.

An important segment of this webinar is an explanation of how the Work Group evaluated the medical literature to formulate the guideline recommendations.

All medical guidelines created by AAOS are submitted for posting on the National Guidelines Clearinghouse web site (www.ngc.gov).

This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:

  • Be able to apply the guideline when diagnosing patient with CTS
  • Be able to apply the guideline in treating CTS patients
  • Understand evidence-based medicine and how the AAOS guideline development process promotes transparency and eliminates biases
