Participation Requirement:
    Participants in Academy surgical skills programs must have completed or be currently enrolled in a residency program accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Surgeons from outside of the United States are required to have similar residency program credentials.

Learn the latest surgical techniques for addressing spinal pathology This interactive skills course provides a comprehensive overview of spinal pathologies, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as fundamental and challenging techniques of various spine surgeries including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar procedures. Compare and contrast minimally invasive techniques, exposures to various interbody technologies, motion preservation advancements, and the complications and rehabilitation associated with each technique.

Hands-on lab sessions give you the opportunity to perform cervical and lumbar decompression, pedicle screw instrumentation, and interbody access techniques. Your expert faculty demonstrates cervical laminoplasty, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), and motion preservation techniques.

In addition, the course features more case-based discussion, debates, and evidence-based approaches for treating spinal pathologies.

    This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:

    • Evaluate patients with cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal pathologies and formulate a treatment plan
    • Compare and contrast various surgical and nonsurgical treatment protocols for spinal pathologies
    • Discuss alternative treatment and rehabilitation techniques for spinal disorders
    • Compare and contrast techniques of different surgical approaches to specific spinal disorders
    • Discuss complications of spine surgery and how to avoid them
    • This course will incorporate contemporary strategies for pain management and infection control
    • Distinguish between or among the equipment alternatives necessary to perform spinal surgery

    This course will benefit practicing orthopaedic and fellowship-trained spine surgeons who have been in practice for several years.

    Request for a refund must be received in writing in the Academy Office (AAOS, 6300 North River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018-4262) by October-29-2009. In all instances a cancellation fee will be charged. Beyond these dates, no monetary refunds will be issued. Instead, the tuition amount, less cancellation fee, will be credited toward another AAOS course within one year.

    The Academy reserves the right to cancel a course thirty (30) days prior to the course date. Any person who has registered for the course will be notified by email and/or certified mail at the address noted in the AAOS member database. A telephone call will also be made to each registrant for whom a number is available. Persons whose registration is received after a course is cancelled will be notified by telephone, email or mail. Registration fees will be refunded in full. However, other costs incurred by the registrant, such as airline or hotel penalties are the responsibility of the registrant.
