Educational Resources

Attention All Residents and Residency Programs:
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, through its Diversity Advisory Board, invites you to participate in an exciting educational opportunity for your residents. We would like to present a 60- to 90-minute, interactive “grand rounds” seminar, entitled Culturally Competent Care: An Orthopaedist’s Responsibility. This seminar aims to raise residents’ recognition of the importance of being aware and understanding of the unique needs and communication preferences their patients may hold due to cultural differences. As you know, the ACGME supports the idea that residents “demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ culture, age, gender and disabilities” as part of the stated core competencies. Furthermore, with several states considering and/or passing legislation requiring physicians to obtain education in culturally competent care, this will be a necessity for residents as they begin their practice.

Our program helps prepare today’s orthopaedic residents to be tomorrow’s leaders in practicing culturally competent care—giving them practical tools and tips for communicating with and treating patients. Each resident will receive a free Cultural Competency Care Challenge CD and Culturally Competent Care Guidebook—created by the AAOS.

In addition to being the “right thing to do,” practicing culturally competent care can help orthopaedic surgeons achieve:

  • Improved quality of care
  • Greater patient adherence and satisfaction
  • Successful outcomes
  • Competitive advantage in the marketplace

If you can offer a window of time in your residents’ schedule and an appropriate venue (lecture or training room with AV capability), we will provide knowledgeable orthopaedic surgeons to discuss these issues with your residents and to present Culturally Competent Care: An Orthopaedist’s Responsibility.

Please email diversity@aaos.org if you have any questions about the program or to schedule this grand rounds seminar for residents. Read more about this exciting initiative.
